Makram Aboul Hosn

Double Bassist | Composer | Music Educator

Makram Aboul Hosn is a Lebanese double bassist, composer, and educator based in Beirut. An active performer across jazz, Arabic, classical, and experimental music, he leads his own artistic projects while also collaborating as a sideman with numerous ensembles and musicians. Throughout his career, he has appeared at major festivals in Lebanon and Europe, including the Baalbeck International Festival, Al Bustan Festival, and Beiteddine International Art Festival.

In 2016, he earned a Master’s degree in Jazz from the Prins Claus Conservatorium in the Netherlands. The same year, he joined the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra and began teaching jazz at Notre Dame University–Louaize. Today, he serves as a professor of music at two universities in Lebanon and is the leader of the Lebanese jazz ensemble The Octopus Band.

As a composer, Makram has written music for theatre productions, television, and chamber orchestras. He has released two albums, Parallel and Transmigration. The latter was supported by a grant from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) and was recorded shortly after the Beirut Port explosion. The album received international recognition and was featured among the top jazz releases of 2021 by All About Jazz.

In 2023, Makram and his band were featured as representatives of jazz in Beirut during the International Jazz Day Global All-Star Concert hosted by Herbie Hancock and UNESCO.

Alongside his performance and teaching activities, he is a faculty member at Metro Academy, an independent music and theatre performance school, and maintains Makram’s Blog, where he writes about music and its role in society and community life.
